Zookeeper’s triumphant return shouldn’t be overshadowed by the reunion of ringleader/frontman Chris Simpson’s legendary project Mineral- a band who played a pivotal role in bringing emo into the mainstream in the mid to late nineties. Indeed, the two are very different animals, and while Mineral may bask in the warm wave of nostalgia, Zookeeper is still Simpson’s most evocative and mature vehicle. On their latest effort, Pink Chalk, Simpson’s voice guides us through an orchestra of soft landscapes painted by piano, guitar, lap steel, horns, and percussion that will likely garner comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel, Belle and Sebastian, and Wilco.

The album is beautiful front to back. It’s a really relaxing, melancholic listen and Flannel makes me think of every flannel I’ve ever lost to an ex-girlfriend. TheColdestCoffee
This is probably the 10th time I’ve bought this album and it’s worth every penny. I was hooked on The Hotelier (formerly the Hotel Year) the moment I heard this Album. It’s a must have for any fan of emo 🖤 “Among the Wildflowers” has sentimental value. The end of this track still makes me cry. I remember this album playing in the background on many sleepless nights spent talking to a dear friend of mine, who I will always miss terribly. “Chewing Wildflowers to Numb the Pain.” Dianna Slater
North Carolina group The Cocker Spaniels aim to write songs that “split the difference between Prince and Guided by Voices.” Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 11, 2021
I've been listening to The Appleseed Cast for close to 20 years and this whole album just connected with me on a fundamental level in a similar way that the 1st time I listened to Mare Vitalis did when I was a teenager. From start to finish I have enjoyed this album and it lives in my daily playlist in its entirety. eodguydave
